Name ~Remus John Lupin Nickname ~Rem, Moony House ~Gryffindor Parents ~John and Elena Lupin Birthday ~10 March 1960 Siblings ~None Pets ~None Looks ~Remus has light brown hair and gets a bit harrier once a month depending on the cycle of the moon. He doesn’t actually feel any particular way about it, which isn’t exactly a bad thing as he usually finds one thing or another to be self conscious about. His vivid eyes fluctuate between browns, sometimes appearing a bit yellowish (again an effect of the lycanthropy), and are very soulful. He almost always greets people with a sweet smile, his light brown eyes flashing with curiosity and kindness. He is highly empathetic and it shows in his eyes as well as gestures when he’s speaking to someone. When they’re brown, he likes them alright, but he doesn’t like the change they take. Really, anything that screams werewolf isn’t going to be something he likes. Remus has a very slim build. Although he may, at times, appear frail, Remus is far from weak. He is underestimated more often than not because of his appearance alone but he is somewhat athletic, with a few gifts from the lycanthropy as well.
Being a werewolf means that the boy can have a pallid or jaundiced complexion the first few nights after a full moon (and possibly some times after,) but his sickly appearance is easily ignored when he seems so happy. His face is always lit up with a smile when he is speaking with someone else, and his warmth is almost infective. While he feels rather tortured on the inside, he does a fairly good job of hiding it from other people as most of them wouldn’t know him well enough to tell the difference. Remus tends to keep a safe distance from the people he speaks with. He knows that it isn't as if he'd suddenly transform into the werewolf and pounce, but he subconsciously reminds himself that he's dangerous. Also, he's rather shy, so the distance is a defense for himself as well.
Remus tends to wear muggle clothing - mainly in paler, less-striking colors. The majority of his possessions (clothes included) are worn and faded - all but falling apart thanks to his extensive knowledge of magic. He seems to wear them well enough, though, considering the fact that the clothes were at a lack of color before he got to them. A book is almost a default for Remus, as he is rarely seen without one either in his hand, or at least in the bag slung over his shoulder. The books in his possession, much like his clothes, are often worn and tattered. Personality ~Brave and steadfast: Remus is a brave, loyal soul and would do anything for his friends. He recognizes friendship as something that isn’t easy to come by – particularly for someone like him – so he treats them more like family than friends. They need only to ask, and Remus will go to the ends of the Earth to secure their happiness. At times, this reaches the point at which it becomes a downfall as he holds the wellbeing of others over himself and even his conscience, which is a force that constantly picks at Remus’ sanity. Intellectual and perceptive: Remus has always been very studious, though he doesn’t exactly have high hopes for the possibility of a career. Still, he would much rather receive high marks than slack. Additionally, he enjoys reading, having obtained a love for classic literature from his mother. He has a very rational mind and will tend to think things through before acting. The Gryffindor spends a great deal of time studying others as well as his books and his empathy allows him to note subtle differences in personality or mannerisms. Compassionate and empathetic: Remus is a generally kind person. He knows the weight of pain and so he is fairly skilled at recognizing it in others. Never the one to find one problem as greater than another, he is extremely philosophical and can be good at giving advice (but terrible at taking it). Still, with all of his empathy, he will never press to get others to speak with him when he doesn’t even want to share his own troubles. The werewolf avoids giving advice unsolicited and tends to maintain a distance from others both physically and figuratively. Self-depreciative and perturbed: No one will ever be as hard on Remus as he is on himself. While he isn’t competitive, he feels the need to do everything to the best of his abilities, which may or may not be the result of overcompensation for his condition. He struggles with inner demons more, probably, than he should because he can’t shake the feeling that he is a monster. That he is somehow less than his classmates and really doesn’t belong with them. Innocent and docile: Always one to expect the best from others, Remus tends to be more trusting than he probably should. This may make him seem a bit naïve, but he would rather believe in others than spend his life wondering whether or not he should be helpful. Alternatively, however, he doesn’t trust that they will be accepting of him. This may seem like a contradiction, but that particular portion of his personality stems more from his own view of himself than his view of others. So long as he continues to see himself as a monster, he will never be able to trust others with his most important secret. He will continue to go out of his way to be accepted for the person he wants other to think he is, though.
History ~Remus Lupin was born in March of 1960. Sometime in the early years of that decade, his father angered the vicious Fenrir Greyback and Remus' life was changed forever before he could even understand what happened. The Lupins did everything they could, but there was no cure for the lycanthropy. It got to the point where they were ready to give up, but the new headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore, gave them the only shot they had. Together, Albus and the Lupins worked out a plan that would allow Remus to safely attend school. In the summer of 1971, a whomping willow was placed on the grounds of Hogwarts. Beneath the willow, there was a tunnel to what would later be known as the shrieking shack, soon to be considered the most haunted place in Britain thanks to Remus. It was there that he spent the nights of the full moon.
The early years of Remus’ life were full of love, though his condition made it very difficult for his parents to maintain other relationships. Even at such a young age, he could tell that this put a strain on his parents, but they never complained. From his father, he learned the basics about being a wizard, and from his mother, he learned to love classic literature and to take joy the simple things in life. Poor Elena Lupin hardly knew how to deal with a child who sometimes made use of accidental magic let alone one who would turn into a monster once a month. It was very difficult for her to leave him during the transformations, but John made arrangements (at no small cost to himself) for Remus to be locked up in an abandoned building when the moon was full, and Remus rarely complained about it himself.
This secluded childhood left the young werewolf friendless until the train ride to Hogwarts, where he met several people his age who didn't seem to think he was as weird as he expected. The three he seemed to make a lasting impression on, though, were James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. It was an amazing feeling, having friends, and Remus reveled in it... who knew how long that would last? Remus didn't tell them about his condition either... although who could blame him? He had just met the boys and he'd spent his entire life being rejected by society. He didn't want to face rejection from the only friends he'd ever had. He used every lie he could come up with to explain why he would leave every month, and he had become an exceptional liar, but it wasn't easy to hide something from such curious people as the friends he had made.
James, Peter, and Sirius found out about Remus' condition towards the end of their first year. There were far too many months spent in the castle and not nearly enough lies in the eleven-year-old's head to keep them off his trail. Remus couldn't risk having them follow him, so he had to tell them. Rather than abandoning him like he thought they would, however, they taught themselves to become illegal animagi to accompany him, a process they didn't perfect until their fifth year together. The changes were particularly hard on Remus (which is the reason for the noises the people of Hogsmeade heard coming from the shack,) but Sirius and James learned to control him in their animagus forms and made the transition a bit easier on poor Remus. He would be forever indebted to them.
Remus was named prefect in his fifth year, something he always attributed to the (vain) hopefulness of the administration to get James, Peter, and Sirius in line. The only problem with that was that Remus was far too afraid of angering someone (particularly one of his friends) to do anything with this new found position. Perhaps this was why he never spoke up when they tortured poor Severus Snape. Remus hated this more than anything else they did... The guilt of his silence would stay with Remus for the remainder of his life.
Remus didn’t make prefect in his sixth year, which was both logical and disappointing. The disappointment wasn’t extremely rational considering the fact that the werewolf hadn’t liked having the position in the first place, but he did hate the idea of letting Professor Dumbledore down. That year seemed filled with disappointments as Sirius led Severus Snape to the Shrieking Shack during a full moon, something for which Remus isn’t quite sure he’s forgiven his fellow Gryffindor. Luckily, Severus hasn’t yet spilled his secret, but Lupin, who isn’t quite sure why, fears it’s only a matter of time. Likes ~Reading, Time with friends, Sunlight, School, Holidays, Spring, Music, Defense, Charms, Chocolate Dislikes ~Werewolves (really just the fact that he is one), Full moons, The Dark Arts, Fighting, Saying nothing when he knows he should, Death eaters, Potions (hey, no one's perfect), Lies (especially from him), Halloween, Tomato Juice Dementor ~Remus’ worst memory is of being bitten. To be quite honest, he’s not really sure if it’s a legitimate memory or not – all darkness, fear and pain – but it’s a recurring nightmare of his, so whether or not it is his actual memory, it takes precedence. Boggart ~Killing someone during a full moon (the moon being his boggart's actual form), Losing one of his friends or family members , Losing the protection of his secret and his place at Hogwarts Patronus ~ Hare - representative of his longing for rebirth as well as his monthly transformation. Ironically easy prey to the hunter his second form is, but Remus isn't your average werewolf and sees the lycanthropy as his own undoing. This will probably change with age. He’s only managed to glimpse his patronus once on a very random memory of him and his friends at Hogsmeade. In general, however, his personal demons tend to keep it from forming itself. Roleplay sample ~ “Right…” Remus said, his brow still slightly furrowed at the thought of a fear of nifflers. Well, it wasn’t really the fear itself. Remus knew that people tended to have irrational fears – at times, they were what kept a species alive. Some adapted an innate fear of heights, the dark, or spiders while others went in a completely different route, often without ever actually having traumatic contact with the object of their fear. The strange thing was imagining Sirius, who was currently in the company of the werewolf with whom he often spend the full moon, afraid of something that was generally harmless – even friendly, some might say, though they were difficult to control. Sure, if you approached a niffler covered in gold, platinum, and diamonds, they would certainly attack, but as Sirius seemed relatively unshiny at the moment, Remus couldn’t see the threat. “Well, I’m also not that long, and I’m rather sure won’t be eating you today,” he teased, smiling slightly.
It was funny to hear that Sirius had some concern about the future… or his grades. In all honesty, Remus hadn’t even considered what Sirius would be like in the future, so he couldn’t really expect to know what the other boy was thinking. He’d just always seemed so nonchalant about things, and it was hard to see beyond that at times. Perhaps his concern was genuine (and most likely recently discovered). Still, Remus couldn’t understand why he would work so hard at Herbology like this. Things just seemed to come easily to him from where Remus was standing; he never would have expected to find Sirius attempting to better his grades by doing extraneous and unnecessary work. “What classes have you failred, Sirius?” the boy asked, his face disbelieving. Of course, he wouldn’t really know, would he? The boys didn’t exactly spend all of their time talking about school. In fact, of late, they didn’t really spend much time talking about anything.
When the conversation moved to small talk, Remus shook his head and turned to gather his things. “My summer was fine,” he answered, a slight nod corroborating his answer. His summer hadn’t changed since the first time it had come up, though, and as he figured Sirius’ hadn’t either, he wouldn’t bother asking. “Are we?” he asked instead, unable to stop himself. “Our friendship, I mean. Things have been… weird.” It was all out now; all he could do was make it seem more like passing curiosity than genuine concern in hopes of keeping things as far away from awkward as possible. Of course, it was more than curiosity. If he’d done something to make it so that one of his best friends couldn’t hold a normal conversation with him, he would’ve liked to know so that he might attempt to repair it. If he thought about it, there were numerous possibilities. Aside from the whole werewolf thing, there was any number of instances where Remus might have done or said something to make Sirius uncomfortable… he just couldn’t put his finger on the moment when their friendship shifted.
